VARIETY OF COCA LEAVES

Below is a description of the three varieties found in the study

The study on the yield of the coca leaf made between May 2007 and February 2008 allowed to obtain samples of coca leaves to determine their taxonomic varieties
. It is important to note that although only three varieties were identified, growers call them with a large number of vernacular names and sometimes the same name is used for two or three botanical varieties. . The reasons for using such a wide range of typical names are the difficulties in identifying botanical varieties which differ only in very small details and differences between the coca plants of the same variety.

VARIETY
Erythroxylum coca Lam. var.

THIS variety is the most common and accounts for 59% of the samples. The most popular names used by growers for this variety are "Tingo Maria" and "Bolivian." . It is a shrub of up to three meters high, with elliptical leaves, sharp ends and a pedicel of 2 to 7 mm. The fruits are ellipsoid of 6 to 12 mm. de longitud long

VARIETY
Erythroxylum coca Lam. Var. ipadu

This variety accounts for 21% of the sample. The most popular names assigned by growers are: "Sweet" and "Bitter". Both fall within the range of morphological variation described for the variety. . The variety is distinguished from the rounded form of coca leaf.

The existence of this variety is limited to the Amazon region, between 100 and 500 meters above sea level.

VARIETY
Erythroxylum coca novogranatense Var. novogranatense

THIS variety constitutes 20% of the sample.. The most popular names used by growers for this variety are: "Little Bird" and "KUKA. . It is a shrub up to 6 meters high, taller than the other species.
